Praying Psalm 24

“Who?”

What is the title of Psalm 24? A Psalm of David.

Read Psalm 24:1-2
1 The earth is to YHWH and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,
2 for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.

What did YHWH do?
Created – mythological gods are always fighting in world. They had petty arguments BUT opposed to this, YHWH created it all.

Read Psalm 24:3-6
3 Who shall ascend the hill of  YHWH? And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from YHWH and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah

WHO will go up?
See psalm 15 – WHO?? Is this blameless man? The one who keeps the commandments…
Israel?
Ultimately CHRIST

Read 24:7-10
7 Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory? YHWH, strong and mighty, YHWH, mighty in battle!
9 Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? YHWH of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah

What is the proud declaration?
YHWH is king, mighty, YHWH of hosts (sabaoth) military victory!

WHO?? The Answer is YHWH.

Wait, God (YHWH) is the one who can "ascend to the hill" (v.3) of YHWH. God is appealing to God. That's strange...

WHO is GOD in each of these sections?
Father Creator (v.1-2), Son Perfect Redeemer (v.3-6), Triumphant declaration of H.S. (v. 7-10)

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?

What is the purpose of this Psalm/prayer?
Asking – answer = DESCRIBING in an interactive way
PRAISE

How does Christ fulfill this psalm?
He is the God-WHO that goes up to the mountain of God. So the PRAISE is that YHWH (Christ) won the victory, and is accepted in the gates!

How can we pray this? Praise Christ for his victory! Praise God for standing before God!

WE PRAY:

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done indeed without our prayer; but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.
How is this done? When God breaks and hinders every evil counsel and will which would not let us hallow the name of God nor let His kingdom come, such as the will of the devil, the world, and our flesh; but strengthens and keeps us steadfast in His Word and in faith unto our end. This is His gracious and good will.
