“You WILL remember!”
What is the title of this Psalm 10?
Trick Question! There is no title. The Septuagent( Greek OT) & Vulgate (Latin OT) continues from Psalm 9:21 – 38. This is any early commentary that Psalm 9 & 10 go together! They have similar themes and words.
So, What is Psalm 9 about? Where did we leave off...
Read Psalm 10:1
1 Why, YHWH, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? How does this opening verse contrast Psalm 9?
In 9:10 YHWH was a refuge in “times of trouble”. Everything was so clear!
Now he’s far – WHY? This is Faith (Ps.9) versus Sight (10:1) Sometimes our visible reality looks very different than what we believe.
Read Psalm 10:2-11
2 In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor/needy; let them be caught in the schemes/thoughts/plans that they have devised.
3 For the wicked boasts of the desires/cravings of his soul/nephesh, and the one greedy for gain curses/blesses and renounces YHWH.
4 In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek; all his schemes/thoughts/plans are, “There is no God/elohim.”
5 His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them.
6 He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.”
7 His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and sin/iniquity.
8 He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; 3 For the wicked boasts of the desires/cravings of his soul/nephesh, and the one greedy for gain curses/blesses and renounces YHWH.
9 he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net.
10 The helpless are crushed, sink down/humbled, and fall by his might.
11 He says in his heart, “God/elohim has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.”
Describe the wicked in relation to:
God – renounces God, Lives as if god doesn’t exist or care – believes God forgotHimself - Arrogant – prideful – prosperous?? (The wicked actually prosper! Now this looks something like our reality) – his own desires come first– believes “in himself” (see Ps.9: 2-3)
Others - pursuer the needy/oppressed, kills and crushes poor, His WORDS show his sin!!
**A broken relationship with God leads to this wrong relationship with others – Notice the 10 commandments, 1,2,&3 have to do with right relationship with God, then 4-10 deal with relationships with others! Also check out Genesis 2-3 (fall away from God) and Genesis 4 (The first murder! Cain & Abel).
Read 10:12-15
12 Arise, YHWH; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. 13 Why does the wicked renounce God/elohim and say in his heart, “You will not call to account/not seek”?
14 But YOU do see, for you note/regard/look on mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands;
to you the helpless commits/forsakes himself; YOU have been the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call/seek his wickedness to account till you find none.
The Psalmist is recalling the Right and Just God from a confident Psalm 9. His prayer is for the worlds of "faith" and "sight" to collide.
Read Psalm 10:16-18
16 YHWH is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land.
17 O YHWH, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.
What does David confidently confess?
YHWH hears poor/needy/afflicted – He WILL do justice.Even though man does stike terror now, YHWH will have the final word
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?
What is the purpose of this Psalm/prayer? Describe wicked in more detail - broken relationship with God and man.
Longing for RIGHT judgment in the midst of scary times
Confidence that YHWH will judge/ The wicked WILL be called to account. (Whether they believe it or not!)
Christ's suffering and death was the result of the wicked. And NOT FAIR!
God did not forget afflicted Jesus- we saw the proof in the in resurrection! God remembered.
How can we pray this?
Sin and death and evil Words haunt us like lions – crush and kill us.
But God will not forget. We confidently hope in HIS justice – no more terror from the evil foes! Resurrection like Christ!
WE PRAY:
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done indeed without our prayer; but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.
How is this done? When God breaks and hinders every evil counsel and will which would not let us hallow the name of God nor let His kingdom come, such as the will of the devil, the world, and our flesh; but strengthens and keeps us steadfast in His Word and in faith unto our end. This is His gracious and good will.
